This HUGE Myth About Advertising Practically Robs Companies Of Valuable Cash

Do you remember the "Got Milk" ads? Popular for many years, these ads were on billboards, magazine ads, and banner ads. Celebrities wanted to be on them. The ads were a times provocative and followed the classic rule of thirds.  Can't miss right?

Wrong! Got Milk ads were totally ineffective. In fact milk consumption per person has dropped, even though the adjusted cost of a gallon of milk is cheaper today than in 1995 when the ad campaign started. How much did this debacle cost them? Annually the cost was roughly $23,000,000 or $437,000,000 in the course of the 19 years that it ran. 

So what was the reasoning that the ad companies used to justify this larceny? You can hear them exclaiming, "It's branding!" and  "We need to stick with it, they need to hear your message 50 times, 100 times, 10,000 times before they believe it." Finally the Milk Industry pulled the plug after years of terrible results. Now, I wasn't part of the conversation but I believe it came down to this. Finally some business person realized...."WE NEED MARKETING THAT DRIVES SALES". You need to realize the same thing even if it is just your FB, Twitter, Instagram, eMail, Craigslist, Internet ad spends. It was wrong of Advertising firms to rip off a coalition of dairy farmers and its wrong for them to rip off your business too.
